Albert Newberry is a Russian-American pianist, composer, educator, and filmmaker from Bland, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor’s of Music in piano performance from Mannes School of Music, a Master’s in music theory and a Performer’s Diploma in collaborative piano from Indiana University. He has studied with many great artists such as Dan Tepfer, Irina Morozova, Peter Serkin, Aram Arakelyan, Anne Epperson and Kevin Murphy. He is equally comfortable playing classical, jazz, bluegrass, gospel, rock, pop, and has performed in such renowned venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He has also taught both piano and music theory privately and in a classroom setting for a number of years. Albert won numerous awards including an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award, Downbeat Magazine Outstanding Performance Award, and second place in the Metropolitan International Piano Competition. He studied filmmaking at the New School and Asheville School of Film and has worked as a production assistant and audio engineer for PBS Appalachia, where he won an Emmy for his music video, “Pastoral”. His short films have been in several festivals, including the Mtn Craft Film Festival and Houston WorldFest, where his short “Fleur de Sel” earned a Remi Award.
